Offline Quillar — user guide

For Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. This page prints cleanly.

1. Install

  1. Open the email titled Your Offline Quillar licence key and click Download the installer. The file is called Quillar-Setup-<version>.exe.
  2. Run it. Windows may show a SmartScreen notice the first time; choose More info → Run anyway.
  3. Accept the default folder. The dictionary needs about 80 MB.

2. Enter your key

The first time Quillar starts it asks for a licence key. Type or paste the key from the email — it looks like QLR-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX; dashes, spaces and lower case are all fine. Quillar contacts our server once to activate this machine and then never again.

One key covers three machines. If a fourth asks, Quillar says so; reply to your licence email and we will free a seat.

3. Look a word up

Type in the search box. Results appear as you type; press Enter or click a headword to open it. Every dictionary that has the word is shown, oldest first, each under its own name and year.

The list to the left is the dictionary's own order. Use it to walk to neighbouring words when you are unsure of a spelling.

4. Tray and glance mode

Quillar keeps running in the system tray when you close its window. From any program:

  1. Select a Tamil word.
  2. Press the hotkey — Ctrl+Shift+Q by default.
  3. A small glance window shows the entry next to your cursor. Press Esc or click away to dismiss it.

Right-click the tray icon to change the hotkey, switch between the palm-leaf and nigandu settings, or quit.

5. Updating

Quillar checks for a newer version when it starts and shows a small notice if there is one. To update, use the download link in your licence email — it always fetches the newest installer — and run it over the existing installation. Your key, settings and hotkey carry across.

6. Uninstall

Settings → Apps → Offline Quillar → Uninstall. Your licence stays valid; installing again on the same machine does not use another seat.

Troubleshooting

“This key is not known”

Check for a typo — 0, O, 1 and I never appear in a key. If you requested a key twice, only the most recent email's key works.

“This key is already active on 3 machines”

Reply to your licence email; we will reset the machines on your key.

The email never arrived

Look in spam. Then request again — a new key replaces the old one. Still nothing? Write to us from the address you used.

Tamil looks wrong on screen

See the fonts page. Quillar renders its own text correctly regardless; this only affects other programs.
