We are a small company with one product line, Quillar, and one conviction: a language's dictionaries should be as close to hand as the language itself — on the desk, in the pocket, and never behind a connection or an account.
What Quillar is
Ten Tamil dictionaries, from a 14th-century nigandu to 1990, merged into one searchable whole of 92,083 headwords. Each source keeps its name, its year and its own wording; Quillar only puts them side by side.
Why offline
Most of the people who need a Tamil dictionary most — students, teachers, readers in small towns — do not have a reliable connection, and none of them should have to give an email address to look a word up. So the dictionary lives on the device, whole.
Where it is going
The online dictionary and the Windows app are here. A handheld reader is being designed. After that: further source sets — cultural, religious, grammatical, herbal, administrative — added to the same dictionary.
The sources
Quillar's headwords come from ten published dictionaries, among them the மதுரைத்தமிழ் பேரகராதி (1937), க. கணபதியின் செந்தமிழ் அகராதி (1950) and the கழகத்தமிழ் அகராதி (1964). Every entry in the app names the dictionary it came from, so a reader can always tell a 1937 sense from a modern one.
